Concept2 Rowing Machine Dimensions UK (2026): Space, Storage and Fit

A Concept2 rowing machine (the RowErg) is 244cm long and 61cm wide, and Concept2 recommends a clear area of 274 × 122cm to row in. Between sessions it splits into two pieces without tools, so it stores in a corner rather than taking over the room.

The short answer: you need a space at least 2.74m long and 1.22m wide to use a Concept2 rowing machine, and about 0.6 × 0.8m of floor (standard legs) or 0.7 × 1.2m (tall legs) to store it. The leg height changes how much room it takes in storage, not in use. It runs on batteries, so it does not need to be near a socket.

Key takeaways

  • In use, a RowErg needs 274 × 122cm. Concept2 gives the machine itself as 244 × 61cm and recommends that larger clear area for rowing, the same for standard and tall legs.
  • Stored, the two versions differ. Separated, standard legs take 63.5 × 83.8cm of floor and tall legs 68.6 × 119.4cm, both 137.2cm high, according to Concept2.
  • Do not stand an assembled RowErg on its end. Concept2 warns it may tip over; it recommends separating the two halves and storing them in a corner or cupboard.
  • It fits a small bedroom on paper. The government's space standard sets a single bedroom at no less than 7.5m², and the RowErg's in-use area is about 3.3m², provided the floor is otherwise clear.
  • It arrives in a 144cm box. Concept2 ships the standard-leg RowErg in one 38 × 55 × 144cm box weighing 31kg, so length is what to check on stairs and landings.

What are the Concept2 RowErg dimensions?

The RowErg is 244cm long and 61cm wide assembled, with a 137cm monorail and a seat 36cm (standard legs) or 51cm (tall legs) from the floor. Those RowErg dimensions, and everything in the table below, are from Concept2 UK's current RowErg specification.

Choosing between the two leg heights is about seat height and getting on and off, not floor space. Our Concept2 RowErg standard vs tall legs guide covers that decision in full.

How much room does a Concept2 rowing machine need?

Allow a clear rectangle of 274 × 122cm. That is Concept2's recommendation for rowing: 30cm more length than the 244cm machine, and double its 61cm width.

The width matters more than people expect. Your elbows and hands need room either side of the 61cm frame, so a rower pushed tight against a wall or a rack is awkward to use.

In area, 274 × 122cm is about 3.3m². For scale, Nationwide's analysis of the English Housing Survey, written by Senior Economist Andrew Harvey, puts the average flat in England at 60.3m² in 2023. A RowErg in use needs roughly 5–6% of that floor.

Will a RowErg fit in a spare bedroom?

Usually, if the length runs the right way. The government's nationally described space standard sets a single bedroom at no less than 7.5m² and 2.15m wide, and a double at no less than 11.5m².

A room of 7.5m² and 2.15m wide is about 3.5m long. The RowErg's 2.74m clear length fits along that long side, and its 1.22m clear width leaves just under a metre beside it, but only with nothing else on that part of the floor.

Before ordering, check three things:

  • the longest clear run of floor, wall to wall or wall to furniture, is at least 2.74m;
  • a door opening into the room does not swing across the rowing area;
  • there is somewhere to stand the separated halves if the room has another use.

Ceiling height is rarely a limit, because you row seated. Only a loft or sloping ceiling needs checking, at head height above the seat.

How do you store a RowErg when you are not using it?

Separate it into two pieces and stand them in a corner or cupboard. Concept2's storage and care guidance says that, separated into two pieces, the rower "can fit into a corner or closet more easily". No tools are needed to split it.

Concept2 is clear about what not to do: "Do not stand the indoor rower up on end as the indoor rower may tip over." It warns that a fall risks injury as well as damage to the frame.

Separated, standard legs take 63.5 × 83.8cm of floor and tall legs 68.6 × 119.4cm, both 137.2cm high. The tall-leg version needs about 36cm more depth, so measure the storage spot as well as the training spot.

Two habits keep storage safe and simple:

  • keep the frame lock in the locked position whenever the two halves are joined and you lift or move the rower, as Concept2 advises;
  • use the RowErg's caster wheels to roll the joined rower, rather than dragging it.

Can you keep a RowErg in a garage or garden room?

Yes, if it is dry. Concept2 recommends "a clean, dry location" for storage and says rowers should not be stored outside in the elements, even under its dust cover.

The PM5 monitor is the part most sensitive to its surroundings. Concept2 advises keeping it away from vast swings in temperature and damp, so in an unheated garage it is worth taking the monitor indoors over winter.

The RowErg needs no mains power: Concept2 says the monitor takes two D-cell batteries and draws power from the spinning flywheel as you row. That makes it easy to place in an outbuilding with no sockets. Our Concept2 PM5 monitor guide covers batteries and set-up, and our gym flooring guide covers what to put under the rower on concrete.

How does the RowErg's size compare with the SkiErg and BikeErg?

The RowErg takes the most floor of Concept2's three machines, but it is the only one that stores away in two pieces. The SkiErg takes the least floor and the most height.

RowErg BikeErg SkiErg
Machine size 244 × 61cm 122 × 61cm 52 × 40.6cm wall-mounted; 60 × 127cm on floor stand
Clear area for use 274 × 122cm 152 × 122cm Not listed; leave room to stand and hinge in front
Height Low; seat 36cm or 51cm Seat 79–103cm 216cm
Stores in two pieces Yes, without tools No No
Our price From £1,095 £1,289 From £909

Figures are from Concept2's BikeErg and SkiErg specification sheets. If the room is short rather than small, the BikeErg needs about 1.2m less length. If the floor is tiny but the ceiling is high, a wall-mounted SkiErg is the smallest option.

Our Concept2 SkiErg guide and Concept2 BikeErg guide cover each machine, and our RowErg vs BikeErg vs SkiErg guide compares the training.

Will a RowErg fit through the door and up the stairs?

Boxed or in two pieces, almost always. Concept2 ships the standard-leg RowErg in one box of 38 × 55 × 144cm weighing 31kg. The tall-leg version comes in two boxes, 38 × 55 × 144cm (26kg) and 32 × 55 × 68cm (12kg).

The 144cm length is the dimension to check. Measure the tightest turn on the stairs or landing, and any narrow hallway the box has to pivot through, before delivery day.

Once assembled, the RowErg is 244cm long but still splits into two halves without tools. If it ever needs to move to another room or floor, separate it rather than carrying it whole.

Is a Concept2 rowing machine worth the floor space?

For most home gyms, yes: 3.3m² buys a full-body cardio machine you can use to meet the weekly activity guideline. The UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines say adults should build up at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, each week.

Three 25-minute moderate rows a week cover half of that 150 minutes, and the rower then stands in a corner for the rest of the week. Our rowing machine benefits guide covers what regular rowing does for the body.

How much space does a row of RowErgs need in a gym?

Plan on 122cm of width per machine and 274cm of depth for the row. That is Concept2's clear area repeated, so five rowers side by side need about 6.1m of wall and 2.74m of depth before you add a walkway behind them.

RowErgs side by side Width needed Depth needed (before walkway) Floor area
2 2.44m 2.74m 6.7m²
4 4.88m 2.74m 13.4m²
6 7.32m 2.74m 20.1m²
10 12.2m 2.74m 33.4m²

In a class studio, rowers can be separated and stood against a wall between sessions. For a commercial floor, the 135kg EN 20957-7 user-weight figure is the one to check against your risk assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I store a RowErg standing upright against a wall? Not in one piece. Concept2 says not to stand the indoor rower up on end because it may tip over, and warns that a fall risks injury and frame damage. Separate it into its two halves instead, which needs no tools, and stand them in a corner or cupboard. Stored that way, standard legs take 63.5 × 83.8cm of floor.

What is the smallest room a RowErg will work in? The deciding figure is length: Concept2 recommends a clear area of 274 × 122cm to row in. A room with at least 2.74m of clear floor in one direction and 1.22m in the other will take it. If you have the width but not the length, the BikeErg needs a clear area of 152 × 122cm, about 1.2m shorter.

Does a RowErg need to be near a plug socket? No. Concept2 says the PM5 monitor takes two D-cell batteries and also draws power from the flywheel while you row. You can put the rower anywhere in the room, or in a garage or garden room with no sockets, as long as the space is dry.

Is a RowErg too heavy for an upstairs room? The machine itself is light for commercial cardio: Concept2 lists it at 26kg with standard legs and 31kg with tall legs. Its weight, plus the user's, is spread along a 244cm frame rather than concentrated in one spot. For a loft conversion or an older floor you are unsure about, ask a builder to check it, as you would for any heavy furniture.

Will a Concept2 rowing machine fit a very tall rower? Concept2 UK states that both leg options fit inseams up to 96.5cm, so taller users do not need the tall-leg version for the stroke itself. Tall legs raise the seat from 36cm to 51cm, which makes getting on and off easier. Measure your inseam if you are unsure, and remember the clear area of 274 × 122cm is the same whichever legs you choose.

Can two people share a RowErg if one needs tall legs? The leg height is fixed per machine, so the household has to pick one version. Both share the same 274 × 122cm clear area in use, but tall legs need about 36cm more storage depth when separated. If anyone sharing it finds a low seat difficult, tall legs are usually the more comfortable choice for the household.
