Plate-loaded or selectorised — which do you need?

This is the main decision, and it is not about budget.

  • Plate-loaded machines take standard Olympic plates on weight horns. There is no weight stack, no selector pin and no cable to service. That means a lower purchase price for the frame, a much higher weight ceiling (you can keep adding plates), and a strength curve that feels closer to free weights. The trade-offs are that changing weight takes time, you need a set of plates and somewhere to store them, and each machine loads one exercise at a time.
  • Selectorised machines have an enclosed weight stack and a pin. Weight changes take a second, nothing to load or unload, and they are far safer and faster for circuit use, general members and anyone new to training. See our Selectorised Equipment collection.

The short version: plate-loaded suits strength-focused facilities, performance gyms and serious home gyms that already own plates. Selectorised suits commercial floors, studios and any setting where a lot of different people use the same machine in sequence.

Why Nautilus plate-loaded

Nautilus builds these around leverage arms that keep resistance matched to your strength curve through the movement — heavier where you are strong, lighter where you are weak. That is the whole design principle the brand is built on, and it is why Nautilus machines appear in commercial gyms decades after installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is plate loaded equipment?

Plate loaded machines use standard weight plates — the same ones you load onto a barbell — rather than a built-in weight stack. This gives you unlimited load progression and a more natural, free-feeling resistance curve that serious strength trainers prefer.

What size weight plates do I need?

Most plate loaded machines in this collection accept standard Olympic plates with a 50mm hole diameter. We'd recommend having a set of Olympic plates ready before your machine arrives — check individual product specs if you're unsure.

Is plate loaded equipment suitable for home gyms?

Yes, provided you have sufficient space and flooring. These are commercial-grade machines built for longevity, making them an excellent long-term investment for a serious home gym setup. Check individual product dimensions before ordering.

How is delivery handled for plate loaded machines?

All plate loaded machines are delivered via specialist two-man courier to your door. Professional installation is available — contact us when ordering if you'd like this arranged.

Do the machines require assembly?

Most machines require basic assembly on arrival. Full instructions are included, and our team is available to assist if needed. Professional installation removes this entirely.

Can I use these machines in a commercial gym?

Yes. Every machine in this collection is built to commercial specification and rated for multi-user daily use in gym environments.
