FreeClimber or stepmill — which do you want?

Both machines train the same thing: climbing against gravity, with no landing impact. They do it differently.

  • FreeClimber — two independent pedals that move up and down. You are not climbing a moving staircase, so the step height is lower, the footprint is smaller, and getting on and off is far easier. Because the pedals are independent, you can also settle into a rhythm at your own speed rather than matching a rotating staircase.
  • Stepmill (Gauntlet) — a genuine revolving staircase with real steps at a set speed. Higher step, taller machine, harder to keep up with, and closer to actually climbing stairs. See our Stepmills collection.

For a home gym with a normal ceiling, or for a mixed-ability commercial floor where the machine has to suit everyone, the FreeClimber is usually the more practical of the two. For a dedicated conditioning floor where the machine is there to be brutal, the stepmill wins.

Why climb at all

Climbing loads the glutes, quads and calves against gravity through a full range with no landing impact, which gives it one of the highest calorie burns per minute in a cardio range while staying gentler on the knees than running.
