A rowing stroke drives from the legs, transfers through the trunk and finishes with the back and arms — roughly 85% of your muscle mass in one movement, with no impact phase at all. That combination is why a rower is the single most useful piece of cardio equipment in a one-machine home gym: it trains legs and upper body together, it is quiet enough for a flat, and most models store on end against a wall.
Rowers are long. You need roughly 2.5m of clear floor plus space behind you for the seat travel, and about 1m of width. Almost all of them store upright afterwards, so the storage footprint is small — but the space has to exist while you are rowing.
