Which cardio machine should you buy?

• You have room for exactly one machine. Buy a rower. It trains legs, back, arms and lungs in one movement, stores upright, and a Concept2 RowERG from £1,095 is the most-used piece of cardio equipment in most home gyms for that reason.
• You live in a flat or train above someone. An indoor cycle or a ski erg. Neither has an impact phase and neither has a motor. A treadmill is the worst choice in this situation regardless of budget.
• Your knees, hips or back are the limiting factor. Cross trainer, ski erg or air bike — all three keep both feet in contact and remove the landing impact entirely.
• You train for conditioning and intervals. An air bike. Resistance is generated by the fan, so it rises with your effort and there is no top setting to outgrow.
• You want the highest calorie burn in the least time. A stepmill. Climbing loads the largest muscles in the body against gravity, which is why stepmills sit at the top of the price range and why they are standard in commercial cardio floors.
• You are training for cycling performance specifically. A Wattbike — from £2,799 — measures left/right balance and pedal-stroke shape, which a standard indoor cycle does not.
• You want running in a small space without a motor. A curved treadmill. It is self-powered, so it needs no plug and cannot run faster than you do.
