How an air bike works

Resistance comes from a fan rather than a weighted flywheel or a magnet. The harder you pedal and push, the more air the fan has to move, so resistance rises with your effort automatically. There is no resistance dial and no top setting — which means an air bike cannot be outgrown, and it is why they are standard equipment in conditioning gyms, fire and military training and professional sport.

Why buy one

  • Full body. The handlebars move with your arms, so an air bike trains upper body and legs together. Very little else in a cardio range does.
  • Zero impact. Both feet stay on the pedals throughout, which makes it usable when knees, hips or ankles rule out running.
  • Self-limiting intensity. A beginner and an elite athlete can use the same machine on the same day at completely different intensities, with no adjustment.
  • Nothing to wear out. No friction pad, no motor, no belt tension to reset.

The one drawback: noise

Air bikes are loud. That is the fan doing its job, and no model on this page avoids it. If you train early in the morning in a flat or a shared house, an indoor cycle from £1,060 in our Exercise Bikes collection is the quieter choice.
