Why Concept2 is the reference standard

All three machines use the same air-resistance flywheel and the same performance monitor, and that monitor is the reason Concept2 dominates competitive and institutional use. A 2,000m time recorded on a Concept2 in a garage in Manchester is directly comparable with one recorded in a rowing club, a CrossFit box or a military selection centre — the machines are calibrated to the same standard. No other cardio brand gives you a number that means something outside your own gym.

The damper setting on the flywheel changes the feel of the stroke, not the difficulty. The monitor calculates real work done regardless of where the damper sits, which is why a 10 on the damper does not make you fitter — it just makes each stroke feel heavier and slower.

Which Concept2?

• RowERG — the complete machine. Legs, trunk, back and arms in one stroke, roughly 85% of your muscle mass, no impact. If you are buying one Concept2, buy this. Stores upright against a wall.
• SkiERG — the most upper-body-dominant of the three, and by far the smallest footprint: you stand still and only the handles move. Wall-mounted or free-standing. The right choice when floor space is the constraint, or when you already own a rower and want something that trains a genuinely different pattern.
• BikeERG — seated, legs only, air resistance, with the same monitor. Useful where a rowing stroke is not viable, and the easiest of the three to use in ordinary clothes.

Space needed

A RowERG needs roughly 2.5m of clear length plus room behind you, then stores on end. A SkiERG needs about the floor area of a doormat. A BikeERG has a footprint similar to a standard indoor cycle.
