What is a fixed barbell?

A fixed barbell is a pre-weighted bar with the plates permanently fitted — you pick a bar up and lift, with nothing to load, no collars and no plate changes. That is why they dominate studio and class settings: a room of people can move between weights in seconds. The trade-off is cost per kilo and floor space, because you buy every weight increment as a separate bar.

Straight bar or curl bar?

  • Straight bars cover presses, rows, squats, lunges and deadlifts. If you are buying one type, buy these.
  • Curl bars have an angled grip that puts the wrist in a neutral position. They are the right choice for arm-focused class formats and for anyone whose wrists complain on a straight bar.
  • Both is the standard studio setup — which is why the Custom Urethane sets are sold as Straight and Curved at the same £1,969.80 price, so you can buy a matched pair.

Rubber or urethane?

Rubber is the lower-cost coating and is fine for home and light studio use. Urethane costs roughly 75% more per bar (£86 against £49 at the entry weight) and earns it on a busy floor: it does not split, fade or leave black marks on the studio floor when bars are dropped and re-racked forty times a session.
