Which type of bike?

• Indoor cycle (spin bike) — a road-bike riding position with a heavy flywheel. The quietest machine in any gym, with no impact at all, which makes it the standard answer for flats and upstairs rooms. Choose belt drive (Spin Attack B1, £1,060) for lower cost, or magnetic resistance (Spin Attack M1, £1,990) for a quieter ride and no friction pad to replace.
• Air bike — a fan for resistance and handlebars that move with your arms. Resistance rises the harder you work, so there is no setting to outgrow. The most effective interval machine here and the least pleasant, which is rather the point.
• Upright bike — conventional seated position, simple console, easy to get on and off. The safest choice for general fitness and for shared or multi-user settings.
• Recumbent bike — reclined seat with back support. Chosen where balance, back comfort or getting on and off is the constraint, which is why they are standard in rehabilitation and older-adult settings.
• Performance bike (Wattbike AtomX, £3,198) — measures left/right balance and the shape of your pedal stroke, not just power and cadence. Bought by cyclists training to a plan, not by people who want a bike in the spare room.
