Which bar should you buy?
Bar length is decided by your rack, not your preference. A 7ft bar needs roughly 2.2m of clear width to sit in J-hooks. If your rack is narrower or your ceiling is low, a 6ft bar such as the JORDAN Aluminium Training Bar at £173 is the correct choice, not a compromise.
General home strength training: the JLC 7ft Olympic Bar at £168 or a JORDAN Steel Series Straight Bar from £162. Both handle squats, presses, rows and deadlifts.
Olympic lifting (snatch, clean and jerk): you need bearings, not bushings — the sleeves must spin freely as the bar rotates in your hands. The JORDAN Steel Series bars with bearings, the Elite Steel High Performance Bar at £276 and the Ultimate Olympic Bars from £316 are the bars built for this.
Arm and accessory work: the JORDAN Steel Series Super Curl Bar with bearings at £174. The angled grip takes the strain off your wrists on curls and skull crushers.
Technique work and beginners: the JORDAN Aluminium Training Bar (6ft) at £173 is lighter than a standard 20kg bar, which makes it the right tool for learning a lift pattern before loading it.
What the price buys
The gap between a £162 bar and a £351 bar is not weight capacity — it is sleeve rotation, knurl consistency and tensile strength of the shaft. A bar that only ever holds a static load for pressing and rowing does not need bearings. A bar that gets whipped overhead does.
Delivery
Every barbell on this page is priced under £250, so a bar bought on its own carries a flat £20 UK delivery charge. Ordering a bar together with plates, collars or a bench takes the order over £250 and delivery becomes free — which usually costs less than the £20 it saves. See our Weight Plates collection. Dispatch within 5 working days, tracking emailed within 24 hours of dispatch.
An Olympic barbell is a standardized weightlifting bar used in strength training, weightlifting, and powerlifting. It typically measures 7 feet long, weighs 20kg, and features rotating sleeves for smooth movement during lifts.
What’s the difference between a standard barbell and an Olympic barbell?
Olympic barbells have a 50mm sleeve diameter and are built to handle heavier loads, with stronger tensile strength and rotating sleeves. Standard barbells are usually shorter, lighter, and have 25mm sleeves.
Are Olympic barbells suitable for home gyms?
Yes. Olympic barbells are a staple in home and commercial gyms. They’re perfect for heavy lifts like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses, and they’re compatible with Olympic weight plates for greater training variety.
What types of Olympic barbells do you sell?
We offer a wide range of Olympic barbells including power bars, weightlifting bars, technique bars, and women's Olympic bars. Options include chrome, black oxide, and rubber-coated finishes to suit all training environments.
Which brands do you carry for Olympic barbells?
We stock high-quality Olympic barbells from trusted names like Jordan Fitness, MYO Strength, Attack Fitness, and more—ideal for both commercial and personal training use.
Do your Olympic barbells include knurling?
Yes. Most Olympic barbells feature knurled grips to enhance hold and control during lifts. Some bars also have centre knurling for added grip during squats.
Can I use Olympic barbells for CrossFit or functional training?
Absolutely. Olympic barbells are commonly used in CrossFit and functional training. They’re built to withstand high-impact movements like cleans, snatches, and overhead presses.
What weight plates work with Olympic barbells?
Olympic barbells require Olympic weight plates with a 50mm centre hole. We offer a full range of bumper plates, tri-grip plates, and urethane-coated plates that are fully compatible.
Are there Olympic barbells for beginners?
Yes. We offer lighter technique bars and women’s Olympic bars (typically 15kg) designed for beginners or those training with lighter weights.
Can I get advice on choosing the right barbell?
Of course! The team at Pro Gym Essentials is happy to help you choose the ideal Olympic barbell for your training style, goals, and gym setup.
