Stepmill, free climber or ladder — what is the difference?

  • Stepmill (Gauntlet). A genuine revolving staircase. You climb real steps at a set speed. This is the closest thing to climbing stairs indoors and is what most commercial gyms mean by “the stair machine”.
  • FreeClimber. Two independent pedals that move up and down rather than a rotating staircase. Smaller footprint, lower step height, and easier to get on and off — the more accessible option of the two StairMaster designs.
  • Jacobs Ladder. A continuous ladder set at roughly 40° that you climb on hands and feet. Because you are on all fours and leaning forward, the load comes off the lower spine, which is why Jacobs Ladder machines are used heavily in rehabilitation and tactical training. Speed is set entirely by you — climb faster and the belt moves faster.

Why buy a stair climber?

Climbing loads the glutes, quads and calves against gravity through their full range, with no landing impact. That combination gives the highest calorie burn per minute of any cardio machine on our site while staying gentler on the knees than running. It is also the hardest cardio machine to cheat on — the staircase keeps moving whether you keep up or not.

Before you order — check your ceiling

Stepmills are tall machines and you stand on a step that is already 30–50cm off the floor. Measure your ceiling height and add your own height plus the step height before ordering; a machine that fits the floor plan can still be unusable in a garage or basement. Jacobs Ladder machines sit at an angle and need less headroom, which makes them the practical choice in a low-ceilinged room.
