Description

High-intensity, low-impact climbing that burns more for less strain. The Jacobs Ladder JL costs £5,050 with free UK delivery. It is a self-powered, angled climbing ladder that gives a full-body cardio workout — research at Louisiana State University's School of Kinesiology found it burns calories at a significantly higher rate than a treadmill, at a lower perceived exertion.

JL or JLX — which should you buy?

The JL at £5,050 is the original single-position ladder: hand-over-hand climbing, nothing to learn, and the machine that all the research was done on. The JLX at £5,670 adds four climbing positions — side rail, stand-up, sled drive and hand-over-hand — plus a redesigned digital dashboard. Pay the extra £620 if the machine will be used by several people or in a commercial circuit where variety keeps members on it. Buy the JL if it is for one or two committed climbers.

Why does it feel easier than a treadmill?

Because your arms take a share of the work and your bodyweight is supported on the rungs, the effort is spread rather than concentrated in the legs. The LSU study is the reason the machine sells: higher calorie burn, lower reported exertion, and no repeated impact. That combination is why it appears in rehab clinics and fire-service training as often as in gyms.
