Roll or tiles?

  • Rubber roll — a continuous surface with almost no joins, which means nothing to lift, catch a plate edge on, or work loose over time. One 1.25m × 10m roll covers 12.5m², which is roughly a single garage bay. The right choice for a permanent gym floor and for any area where heavy plates get dropped.
  • Interlocking tiles — lay themselves, need no adhesive, and can be lifted and moved. Ideal for renting, for covering only the working area under a rack or bench, and for anyone who wants to start small and extend later. Buy a few spare tiles: a damaged tile is replaced individually, which a roll cannot be.

Why flooring is not optional in a home gym

  1. It protects the slab. A dropped 20kg plate on bare concrete cracks the surface, and on a wooden floor it goes straight through. Flooring is cheaper than either repair.
  2. It protects the equipment. Bars and plates chip on concrete. Rubber absorbs the impact instead.
  3. It cuts the noise dramatically. This is what makes a garage or upstairs gym viable in a house with other people in it, and it is the single most common reason home gyms get shut down.
  4. It stops the rack walking. Steel on smooth concrete slides under load. Rubber does not.

How much do you need?

Measure the area you will actually train on, not the whole room. For most home gyms that is the rack footprint plus a metre in front of it, and the bench or platform area — typically 8–15m², which one or two rubber rolls will cover. If you only ever lift in one spot, tiles under that spot are enough and cost a fraction of a full floor.
