Concept2 BikeErg UK Buyer's Guide (2026): Is It the Right Indoor Bike?

The Concept2 BikeErg is an air-braked indoor bike with the same PM5 monitor as Concept2's rower and ski trainer. It is built for seated riding to numbers: endurance sessions, intervals and power tests that compare directly with any other Concept2 machine.

The short answer: buy the BikeErg (£1,289) if you want a hard-wearing, low-maintenance bike for seated cycling, measured in watts, that anyone in the house can ride on day one. Choose an air bike instead if you want arms and legs working together in short, brutal intervals, and a Wattbike if you are a cyclist training seriously with power. There is one version of the BikeErg, so the real decision is whether it is the right bike, not which one.

Key takeaways

  • It is a seated, legs-only bike with air resistance. Concept2 uses an air-resistance flywheel with a clutch, so the wheel keeps spinning when you stop pedalling.
  • It is compact. Concept2 gives the footprint as 122 × 61cm and recommends 152 × 122cm of space to use it.
  • It fits a wide range of riders. Concept2 lists a seat-to-pedal range of 78–104cm on the standard seat and a maximum user weight of 159kg.
  • It costs £1,289 with free UK mainland delivery. There is one configuration, and no power socket is needed: the PM5 runs on two D-cell batteries topped up by the flywheel.
  • Leisure cycling is popular but flat. Sport England's Active Lives survey for November 2024 to November 2025 counted around 6.1 million adults in England cycling for leisure and sport, slightly up on the year before.

What is the Concept2 BikeErg?

An upright indoor bike that uses a fan-style flywheel for resistance. The harder you pedal, the more air the flywheel moves and the harder it pushes back, so there is no resistance knob to reach the top of.

Concept2 builds it with a welded aluminium frame on steel feet, a self-tensioning belt drive and a clutch on the flywheel. Saddle and handlebars adjust without tools, and the bike takes standard saddles, handlebars and pedals if you want to fit your own.

Who should buy a BikeErg?

People who want seated, measurable cardio with almost no learning curve. Anyone who can ride a bike can use it properly in the first session, which is not true of a rower.

It suits:

  • households where several people of different heights share one bike, because the saddle and bars adjust quickly;
  • lifters who want leg-dominant conditioning, or long steady sessions, without loading the back;
  • anyone who trains to numbers and wants their watts and times to compare with other Concept2 machines;
  • gyms and studios that want a bike that is easy for members to set up and hard to break.

Indoor riding also sidesteps the weather. Sport England's Active Lives survey counted around 6.1 million adults in England cycling for leisure and sport between November 2024 and November 2025, a figure it describes as stabilising and still below longer-term levels.

It is less suited to riders who want to train on a road-bike position with precise gear changes, or to anyone who wants arms working as hard as legs. Both of those are covered in the comparison below.

How does the BikeErg compare with an air bike, spin bike or Wattbike?

By what moves and what the bike is for. The BikeErg is legs-only and seated; an air bike adds the arms; a spin bike uses a flywheel and brake rather than air; a Wattbike is built around cycling power data.

Bike Resistance What works Best for Our price
Concept 2 BikeERG Air flywheel with clutch Legs Seated endurance and intervals, comparable Concept2 data £1,289
Attack Fitness Air Attack Air Bike Air fan Arms and legs Short, hard conditioning intervals £1,160
StairMaster HIIT Bike Dual-action wind resistance Arms and legs Heavy-use interval work on a commercial floor £1,640
Attack Fitness Spin Attack M1 Indoor Cycle Magnetic, 32-position lever Legs Quiet studio and class riding £1,990
Wattbike AtomX Electromagnetic Legs Cyclists training with power £3,198

The BikeErg is the most affordable way into calibrated seated cycling in our range. Our spin bike vs air bike guide explains the resistance types in detail, and our Wattbike guide compares the AtomX with the BikeErg head to head.

Will the BikeErg fit me and my family?

Most adults, yes. Concept2 gives a seat-to-pedal range of 78–104cm on the standard seat and lists a maximum user weight of 159kg.

Concept2 also makes a low seat, which brings the range down to 73–97cm for shorter riders, and a separate tall seat post. We sell the BikeErg in its standard configuration, so if you need either part, call us before ordering and we will check what we can supply.

If you are very tall, very short or buying for a mixed household, tell us the heights of the riders before ordering and we will check them against Concept2's figures.

How much space does a BikeErg need?

A 122 × 61cm footprint, with 152 × 122cm recommended in use. That makes it smaller in use than a rower, which Concept2 recommends giving 274 × 122cm.

Concept2 says the BikeErg must be stored fully assembled, so it does not fold or split like the RowErg. Plan a permanent spot rather than a cupboard. No power socket is needed, because the PM5 runs on two D-cell batteries that the flywheel helps keep charged.

Air bikes move air and make a rushing noise that rises with effort, so think about shared walls and floors. Our small-space home gym guide covers layout, and our gym flooring guide covers what to put underneath.

Is the BikeErg good enough for a commercial gym?

Yes. There is no motor, no mains power and no touchscreen, the belt drive is self-tensioning, and Concept2 lists a 159kg maximum user weight. Quick saddle and bar adjustment also matters on a busy floor, where members change over every few minutes.

Commercial buyers should check which use class a machine is declared to. ISO 20957-1:2024 separates equipment for domestic use (class H) from equipment in studios where access is regulated by the owner (classes S and I).

Once members are using it, the HSE says work equipment exposed to wear should be inspected at intervals set by your risk assessment. Our commercial cardio floor plan guide covers how many bikes a floor needs.

BikeErg, RowErg or SkiErg: which Concept2 should you buy?

The BikeErg if you want the easiest machine to use and leg-focused cardio. The RowErg if you want one machine that trains legs, back and arms together. The SkiErg if floor space is tight or you want upper-body conditioning.

Concept 2 BikeERG Concept 2 RowERG Concept 2 SkiERG
Main muscles Legs Legs, back and arms Upper body and trunk
Learning curve Almost none Needs coaching Short
Storage Stays assembled Separates into two pieces Wall-mounted or floor stand
Our price £1,289 £1,095 – £1,285 £909 – £1,187

All three share the PM5, so scores are comparable across them. Our RowErg vs BikeErg vs SkiErg guide goes deeper, and The Concept 2 Triple puts all three in one order from £3,293. Riding counts towards the NHS guideline of 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week, and the NHS lists "riding a bike fast or on hills" as vigorous.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit my own saddle and pedals to a BikeErg? Yes. Concept2 says the BikeErg takes standard bike parts, so you can fit your own saddle, handlebars and pedals. That is useful for cyclists who ride clipless pedals outdoors or who already have a saddle they are comfortable on. Keep the original parts if the bike is shared, so other riders can switch back.

Does the BikeErg need to be plugged in? No. Concept2 says the PM5 runs on two D-cell batteries, which are included, and draws power from the spinning flywheel during workouts to extend battery life. You can put it in a garage, an outbuilding or the middle of a gym floor without a socket nearby.

Is the BikeErg quiet enough for a flat? Concept2 describes the ride as smooth and quiet, but it is still an air-braked bike, so there is a fan noise that rises as you work harder. If noise is the deciding factor, a magnetic studio bike such as the Spin Attack M1 is the quieter choice.

Can I use the BikeErg with training apps? The PM5 is the same monitor used on the RowErg and SkiErg, and Concept2's specification sheet lists Bluetooth and ANT+ heart rate monitoring, USB data management and ErgData app connectivity. Check the specific third-party app you use for BikeErg support before you buy.

Is the BikeErg worth it over a cheaper spin bike? If you train to numbers, yes. The PM5 gives you watts, distance and pace that compare directly with any other Concept2 machine and with your own past sessions. If you only want to sweat and are not tracking performance, a simpler bike will do the job, but our range starts at the premium end.

Do you deliver the BikeErg to Northern Ireland? No. We deliver to UK mainland only. Delivery on the BikeErg is free, orders are dispatched within 5 working days, and tracking is emailed within 24 hours of dispatch.
