StairMaster 10G Buyer's Guide UK (2026): The Flagship Gauntlet and OverDrive Explained

StairMaster 10G Buyer's Guide UK (2026): The Flagship Gauntlet and OverDrive Explained

The StairMaster 10G Gauntlet is the flagship of StairMaster's stepmill range. It does everything the 8Gx does and adds three things: OverDrive Training Mode, which simulates a sled push and farmer's carry up stairs; deeper 30cm steps; and 5 years parts and labour warranty.

The short answer: buy the 10G if you run an athletic, tactical, emergency-services or premium commercial facility and will use OverDrive, or if you want the most robust stepmill StairMaster makes for a high-specification space with a 3.05m ceiling. It costs £7,375 with the Apex LED Display or £8,895 with the 16" Apex HD Touchscreen Display. If you will not use OverDrive, the 8Gx gives the same core workout for less.

Key takeaways

  • OverDrive is the reason to buy the 10G. It simulates a sled push and farmer's carry up stairs — loaded-climb work no other Gauntlet offers.
  • The steps are the deepest in the range: 30cm deep and 56cm wide, against 25cm deep on the 8Gx.
  • 5 years parts and labour on top of a 10-year frame warranty, against 2 years on the 8Gx.
  • It needs a 3.05m ceiling and a 12V/5A supply, and weighs 293kg before a user steps on.
  • Loaded stair climbing is a real occupational test. The US firefighter CPAT stair climb is run on a StepMill for 3 minutes at 60 steps per minute carrying 75lb.

What is the StairMaster 10G?

StairMaster's top Gauntlet: a full-size revolving staircase built for continuous, high-intensity commercial use. Its eight-step staircase is driven by an electronically controlled generator, brake and drive chain, giving precise, smooth speed control from a slow walk to 190 steps per minute.

It shares the 8Gx's ceiling height, user limit, step-rate range and power requirement. What sets it apart is what you can do on it and how long it is covered.

It is built for performance facilities, commercial gyms and high-specification home gyms rather than general fitness floors, and the price reflects that.

What is OverDrive Training Mode?

A 10G-only training mode that simulates a sled push and a farmer's carry up stairs. Instead of climbing against your body weight alone, the machine adds the resistance of a load to the climb, turning a cardio station into a loaded-conditioning one.

That matters most for people whose job or sport involves carrying weight uphill or upstairs: field and court athletes, military and tactical units, and fire and emergency services.

Loaded stair climbing is an established occupational test. The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) used by many US fire departments includes a stair climb on a StepMill: 3 minutes at a set 60 steps per minute, wearing a 50lb vest to simulate breathing apparatus plus 25lb more to simulate a high-rise pack. OverDrive does not replicate that test exactly, but it trains the same quality — climbing under load — on the same type of machine.

If none of your members train for that kind of demand, OverDrive is a feature you are paying for and will not use. That is the honest test for whether the 10G is worth it.

Who should buy the StairMaster 10G?

Four kinds of buyer get full value from it.

  • Athletic and performance facilities that programme loaded conditioning and want it on a climbing machine.
  • Tactical, military and emergency-services training centres, where carrying load upstairs is the job.
  • Premium commercial gyms that want the flagship stepmill and the longest parts and labour cover.
  • High-specification home gyms with a 3.05m ceiling, where the owner wants the deepest steps and the most robust machine StairMaster makes.

For a general commercial floor without loaded-climb training, the 8Gx is the better buy. The full three-way comparison is in our StairMaster 4G vs 8Gx vs 10G guide.

What do the 10G's deeper steps change?

Foot placement, mostly. The 10G's steps are 30cm deep and 56cm wide, against 25cm deep on the 8Gx and 27 × 46cm on the 4G.

Five extra centimetres of depth sounds small, but on a revolving staircase it is the difference between placing the whole foot and climbing on the forefoot. It matters for bigger users, for long sessions where fatigue makes foot placement sloppy, and for OverDrive work, where a stable base under load is the point.

The step height is the same 20cm as the 8Gx, and both share a 23cm step-up to the first step.

Which 10G console should you choose?

The Apex LED Display for a working performance floor; the 16" Apex HD Touchscreen Display for premium gyms and where precise speed control matters.

Apex LED Display 16" Apex HD Touchscreen Display
Price £7,375 £8,895
Interface Clear, responsive, tracks every key metric Fully interactive, customisable connected workouts
Speed adjustment 25 levels Single steps-per-minute increments
Extra connectivity — BLE headphones and heart rate
Business finance on its own Yes Yes

The single steps-per-minute adjustment on the touchscreen is the one console difference that affects training rather than experience: coaches running precise protocols can set an exact pace rather than choosing between levels. At this price point, the touchscreen is often part of the offer rather than an upgrade.

What does the 10G need on site?

The same as the 8Gx, plus more allowance for weight. Check these before ordering:

  • Ceiling: 3.05m (10ft) at the machine's position, measured under any beam, ducting or light fitting.
  • Power: a 12V/5A supply at the machine.
  • Footprint: 160 × 86cm, plus room behind and beside it.
  • Floor: 293kg for the machine, plus a user of up to 181kg — and more effective load during OverDrive work. A ground-floor slab is ideal; have any suspended floor or mezzanine checked.
  • Access: it ships at 366kg, so the route from vehicle to floor matters as much as the room.

Our StairMaster ceiling height guide explains how to measure the height that actually counts.

What does the 10G's warranty mean for running costs?

Fewer surprises over the first five years. The 10G carries a limited 10-year warranty on the structural frame and 5 years parts and labour on everything else — more than double the 8Gx's 2 years and five times the 4G's 1 year.

On a machine running all day, that cover is a real part of the price difference. It does not remove your own maintenance duty: equipment used at work falls under the HSE's Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, which require it to be kept in efficient working order and inspected where safety depends on installation conditions.

The relevant product standard for stepmills is ISO 20957-8:2017, covering steppers, stairclimbers and climbers.

What do buyers ask us about the 10G?

Whether OverDrive is worth £2,380 over an 8Gx. Our answer is the same every time: only if someone will use it. For a gym that programmes loaded conditioning or trains tactical and emergency-services clients, it is the machine to buy. For a general floor, the 8Gx is.

Finance is the other common question, and the 10G is the simplest machine in the range on that front: at £7,375 and £8,895, both consoles clear our £5,000 business finance threshold on their own. Every StairMaster model is compared in our complete StairMaster buyer's guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is OverDrive on the StairMaster 10G? OverDrive Training Mode simulates a sled push and a farmer's carry up stairs, adding the resistance of a load to the climb. It is only available on the 10G. It suits athletes, military and tactical units and fire and emergency services — anyone who needs to climb under load rather than just climb.

Is the StairMaster 10G worth it over the 8Gx? Only if you will use what it adds. The 10G costs £2,380 more at the standard console and adds OverDrive Training Mode, 30cm-deep steps against 25cm, and 5 years parts and labour against 2. Ceiling height, user weight limit, step rate and power requirement are the same on both.

What ceiling height does the StairMaster 10G need? 3.05m (10ft), measured at the exact spot the machine will stand. The machine itself is 210cm tall, and the recommended figure allows for a user on the top step. That rules it out of most UK homes; the 4G is the Gauntlet designed for a 2.44m ceiling.

How heavy is the StairMaster 10G? The 10G weighs 293kg (646lbs) and ships at 366kg (807lbs). It takes users up to 181kg (400lbs). Install it on a ground-floor slab where possible, and have any suspended floor or mezzanine checked, especially if OverDrive work will add load.

Which StairMaster 10G console is better? The 16" Apex HD Touchscreen Display (£8,895) adds interactive connected workouts, BLE headphone and heart rate connectivity, and speed adjustment in single steps-per-minute increments, which suits coaches running precise protocols. The Apex LED Display (£7,375) tracks every key metric across 25 levels and suits a working performance floor.

How long is the StairMaster 10G warranty? A limited 10-year warranty on the structural frame (excluding coatings) and 5 years parts and labour on all other components — the longest parts and labour cover of any StairMaster we sell. Commercial operators still need a documented maintenance routine under UK work-equipment regulations.
