On every machine, the touchscreen buys the interface — connected workouts, entertainment, a larger interactive display — not a harder workout. The staircase or pedals, drive and resistance are the same with either console.
The FreeClimber is the outlier worth knowing about. With the Apex 16 inch HD Touch it costs £9,995, which is £1,100 more than a 10G with its touchscreen. Its standard Apex LED console is also self-generating and needs no mains supply, which removes the cost of getting a socket to the machine.

What you give up moving up from the 4G is room: the 8Gx and 10G both need a 3.05m ceiling rather than 2.44m, and a 12V/5A power supply at the machine's position. For many home buyers, that decides the model before price does.

Three costs sit behind the price tag: warranty cover, space and upkeep.
Warranty. Every model has a 10-year structural frame warranty; the difference is parts and labour. The 4G's light commercial terms give 1 year, the 8Gx, FreeClimber and HIIT Bike 2 years, and the 10G 5 years. On a machine running all day, four extra years of parts and labour cover is a real part of the 10G's price.
Space. In a commercial facility, floor area has a cost too. Sport England's fitness space guidance plans on 5m² per piece of equipment, so each stepmill occupies several times its own footprint once circulation is included.
Upkeep. Equipment used at work falls under the HSE's Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, which require it to be maintained in efficient working order. Budget for a documented service routine on a commercial floor, particularly for the step chain and drive.
Like for like, on four points: the exact model, the exact console, the warranty terms and what delivery includes. Two quotes for "a StairMaster 8Gx" can differ by £1,500 simply because of the console.
For commercial buyers, ask which use class the machine is intended for. ISO 20957-1:2024 separates equipment for private homes from equipment for clubs, hotels, studios and similar facilities, which is a more precise claim than the word "commercial".
