The best StairMaster for most commercial gyms is the 8Gx Gauntlet. It is the model StairMaster builds for heavy shared use, it takes users up to 181kg, and it is the cheapest Gauntlet whose warranty covers a membership gym. The 10G is the right choice only where you will use its OverDrive loaded-climb mode; the compact 4G belongs in hotels, residential blocks and low-use private studios, not on a membership floor.
The short answer: for a membership gym, busy PT studio or open-access university or workplace gym, specify the 8Gx from £4,995. For athletic, tactical or emergency-services training, specify the 10G from £7,375. Add an FC 8 Series FreeClimber from £3,766 if your members include people who cannot manage a staircase.
Key takeaways
The 8Gx, for most commercial floors. It is built from rust-free polypropylene around an all-new drive train for smooth, quiet running, and it is warranted for the shared, all-day use a membership gym puts it through.
The right model depends on the type of facility more than on budget. This is how we match them; our StairMaster 8Gx buyer's guide covers the default commercial model in full.
| Facility | Recommended StairMaster | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Independent or chain membership gym | 8Gx | Built and warranted for heavy shared use |
| Busy PT or boutique studio (over 8 hours a day) | 8Gx | Outside the 4G's light commercial terms |
| University, school or open-access workplace gym | 8Gx | Long hours, many users, 181kg capacity |
| Athletic, tactical, military or emergency-services facility | 10G | OverDrive loaded-climb training |
| Hotel, residential block or low-use private studio | 4G | Non-membership, under 8 hours a day, 2.44m ceiling |

On the figures that matter to an operator, the 8Gx and 10G share their ceiling, power and user limit. The differences are OverDrive, top speed (190 steps per minute on the 10G against 162 on the 8Gx), step depth, weight and warranty.

Because its warranty does not cover that use. The 4G carries a light commercial warranty for non-membership facilities operating under 8 hours a day: 10 years on the frame and 1 year on parts, labour and wear items.
A gym with paying members, or any studio open longer than that, falls outside those terms. The 8Gx is the entry point for that kind of floor, and it also lifts the user limit from 159kg to 181kg and widens the step from 46cm to 56cm.
When comparing quotes from different suppliers, the international standard ISO 20957-1:2024 is a useful reference. It separates equipment for private homes from equipment for training areas in clubs, studios, hotels and similar facilities, so asking which use class a machine is intended for is more precise than asking whether it is "commercial".
When someone will use OverDrive Training Mode. It simulates a sled push and farmer's carry up stairs, turning the stepmill into a loaded-conditioning station, and it is only available on the 10G.
Loaded stair climbing is an established test of occupational fitness. The Candidate Physical Ability Test used by many US fire departments includes a 3-minute StepMill climb at 60 steps per minute carrying 75lb. If your members train for that kind of demand, buy the 10G. If they do not, the 8Gx gives the same core workout for £2,380 less at the standard console.
Our StairMaster 10G buyer's guide explains OverDrive and the 10G's specification in detail, and the complete StairMaster buyer's guide covers the whole range.
Usually one to three on an independent floor. Stepmills are a specialist station: members queue for them at peak, but they rarely run all day the way treadmills do.
Start from the space. Sport England's fitness and exercise space design guidance plans gyms at 5m² per piece of equipment and suggests roughly 40–60% of equipment be cardiovascular, adjusted for local demand. An 8Gx's own footprint is 1.26m²; the rest of the allowance is circulation and step-off space.
Demand for fitness facilities is growing. Sport England's Active Lives Adult Survey for November 2024–25 recorded 15.3 million adults in England taking part in fitness activities, up 921,000 on the previous year.
Our guide to planning a commercial cardio floor works through the full machine count and mix.
If your membership is mixed, yes. A Gauntlet and a FreeClimber serve different people, so a floor with both is not duplicating a station.
The FC 8 Series FreeClimber uses two independent pedals instead of a revolving staircase. Users stay near floor level, never step down, and can set a step height as low as 2.5cm, which brings people returning from injury, older members and anyone put off by a stepmill into the climbing category.
Its Apex LED console (£3,766) is self-generating, so it needs no socket and can go anywhere on the floor. The Apex 16 inch HD Touch (£9,995) needs a 12V/5A supply. Our FreeClimber guide covers the machine in full.

On a machine running all day, the simpler LED console also has less to go wrong. On the 10G, the touchscreen also sets speed in single steps-per-minute increments rather than 25 levels, which suits coaches running precise protocols.
Height, power, a strong floor and a clear route in. Check all five before ordering an 8Gx or 10G.
The StairMaster ceiling height guide explains how to measure the height that counts.
A documented routine, because the law expects one. The HSE's Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations require equipment used at work to be maintained in efficient working order and inspected where safety depends on installation conditions.
On a stepmill, the step chain and drive are the parts to schedule. The 8Gx's service panel removes with four fasteners for direct access to the drive train and electronics. The product standard for this type of machine is ISO 20957-8:2017, which covers steppers, stairclimbers and climbers.
Warranty length is part of running cost. The 10G's 5 years parts and labour is the longest of any StairMaster we sell; the 8Gx and FreeClimber carry 2 years.

See the StairMaster 8Gx → Call 0333 880 3211Whether they really need the 8Gx over the cheaper 4G. The answer almost always comes down to warranty terms rather than price: once a facility has paying members or runs long hours, the 4G's light commercial cover no longer fits.
The second question is finance. The 8Gx LED console at £4,995 sits £5 under our £5,000 business finance threshold, so it qualifies alongside any other item on the order. Every other 8Gx and 10G configuration qualifies on its own.
What is the best StairMaster for a gym with members? The 8Gx Gauntlet. It is the cheapest StairMaster stepmill built and warranted for heavy shared use, with a 181kg user limit, 56cm-wide steps, 24–162 steps per minute and 2 years parts and labour on top of a 10-year frame warranty. Choose the 10G instead only if members will use OverDrive loaded-climb training.
Can I use a StairMaster 4G in a PT studio? Yes, if the studio is a non-membership facility operating under 8 hours a day, which is the scope of the 4G's light commercial warranty. A private appointment-only studio often fits. A studio open longer, or one selling memberships, should specify the 8Gx.
How much space does a commercial stepmill need? The 8Gx's footprint is 147 × 86cm and the 10G's is 160 × 86cm, but Sport England's design guidance plans 5m² per piece of equipment to allow for circulation and safe step-off. Both machines also need a 3.05m ceiling at their exact position.
Do commercial StairMasters need a dedicated power supply? The 8Gx and 10G both need a 12V/5A supply at the machine. The FC 8 Series FreeClimber's Apex LED console is self-generating and needs no socket, while its Apex 16 inch HD Touch needs a 12V/5A supply. Plan socket positions when you lay out the floor.
Can a gym buy StairMasters on finance? Yes. Business finance through Vercas Financial is available on equipment orders of £5,000 and above, for UK limited companies and partnerships of four or more partners. Every 8Gx and 10G configuration qualifies on its own except the 8Gx LED at £4,995, which qualifies alongside any other item on the same order.
How long do commercial StairMasters last? StairMaster does not publish a service life, so the most reliable guide is the warranty. All Gauntlets carry 10 years on the structural frame; parts and labour run 2 years on the 8Gx and 5 years on the 10G. A documented maintenance routine, which UK work-equipment regulations require anyway, is what keeps a machine running beyond that.
